Our leaky windows were at fault.

The following month, our energy bill went way down and we went through only half as much fuel in our furnace

My fiance and I decided we wanted to buy a small house. We couldn’t afford to buy anything really big, so we ended up with an 800 square foot house. It only had one bedroom and one bathroom. There was a living rooming and kitchen combo. Even though it was small, it was roomy enough for two and we weren’t planning a family any time soon. Shortly after we made our move, winter arrived. We knew our heating system was in good shape, since we had it inspected before buying the house. When we received our first energy bill, we were surprised. We couldn’t understand how the two of us had used so much energy. We couldn’t figure how it could cost so much for heating in such a small home. We decided to have another inspection done on the furnace. The inspection showed that our furnace was running efficiently so we had to find another reason for the spike in energy. The HVAC tech was looking at the window and she noticed there was a big draft coming from around the windows. All of our heating was being cooled by the cold air coming in around the windows. She went to her van and brought in some weather stripping, which she placed around the windows and the doors. The following month, our energy bill went way down and we went through only half as much fuel in our furnace. Within three months, our energy bills had dropped nearly 30% thanks to the smart HVAC tech. I couldn’t believe drafts could cause such a rise in energy bills.
