I have been an HVAC technician, an HVAC company owner, a home inspector and now I am the owner of an indoor comfort business that employs heating experts, a/c specialists and HVAC technicians to ensure that my customers’ homes are equipped with whatever they need to help with indoor comfort.
One of the most popular items I see flying out our doors are smart thermostats. Dial thermostats were what I grew up using, then everyone switched to the digital thermostats. Well, now it seems that the digital thermostat’s day has come and gone. The smart thermostats are programmable thermostats that a person can sync with their smartphone. I swear all of this technology is “smarter” than I am. The smart thermostat allows them to control their home temperature even when they’re not there. It saves folks a lot of money on their monthly heating and cooling bills by having a programmable thermostat set the temperature to a less comfortable level when no one is around. You can also have a smart thermostat recognize when you’ve arrived home and immediately kick on the furnace or air conditioner when you walk in the door! It sounds a little creepy to me (kind of like big brother is watching you through your HVAC system) but all of the younger home buyers really seem to love it. I’m not complaining; in fact, I have a smart thermostat system at my house. I think I was probably a little more skeptical when the smart thermostats hit the market. Now, I’m just slightly skeptical.
